Cat Dental Care · Chantilly, VA

Most cats with dental disease
show no signs at all.
That's the problem.

Cats are instinctively wired to hide pain. By the time your cat is obviously uncomfortable, dental disease has often been progressing quietly for months or years. At Nova Pets Health Center in Chantilly, we perform professional cat dental cleanings, digital X-rays, extractions, and oral surgery under full general anesthesia. We handle cases that other practices refer out.

What our clients say about cat dental care at Nova Pets.

★★★★★

“After visiting another veterinarian who was unable to perform my cat's dental extractions, I brought him to Dr. Masood. From the very beginning, Dr. Masood was confident, knowledgeable, and reassuring. He did an excellent job with my cat's tooth extractions, and I couldn't be more grateful for the care he provided. Dr. Masood and his entire team are truly exceptional — kind, professional, and compassionate. They made a stressful situation so much easier, and I felt confident that my cat was in the best hands. I highly recommend Dr. Masood to anyone looking for outstanding veterinary dental care.”

Understanding feline dental disease

Cats don't complain.
Their mouths do the suffering silently.

Dogs will sometimes let you know something hurts. Cats almost never do. They continue eating through significant oral pain because showing weakness is not in their nature. By the time you notice something is wrong, the disease is usually well established.

This is why routine dental exams and professional cleanings matter so much for cats. A visual check at home tells you almost nothing — the disease lives below the gumline, in the roots, and in places only digital X-rays can see.

The good news: caught and treated properly, most feline dental disease is very manageable. Many owners are surprised by how much better their cat does after a procedure — more comfortable, more playful, eating better — because a chronic source of pain has finally been addressed.

Signs worth paying attention to

  • Reduced appetite or preference for soft food
  • Dropping food while eating
  • Pawing at the mouth or face
  • Bad breath that seems persistent or worsening
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Visible tartar or redness along the gumline
  • Changes in grooming habits
  • Becoming less social or more irritable
  • Weight loss over time

Most cats show no obvious signs

The absence of symptoms does not mean a healthy mouth. Annual dental exams are the only reliable way to know what's actually happening.

Our services

Complete cat dental care.
In-house, start to finish.

We don't refer out for routine feline dental work or straightforward oral surgery. Dr. Masood performs cleanings, extractions, and oral surgery here in Chantilly — with full anesthesia and monitoring on every procedure.

Professional dental cleaning
Under full general anesthesia, we clean above and below the gumline — the only way to properly address periodontal disease in cats. Digital X-rays are taken as part of every cleaning so we're not guessing about what's happening at the root and bone level.
Tooth extractions
Extractions are one of the most impactful procedures we perform in cats. When a tooth is diseased, fractured, or resorbing, removing it is often the most effective way to relieve pain. Cats adapt extraordinarily well — most return to eating normally within days, often more comfortable than they've been in months.
Oral surgery
Dr. Masood handles complex oral surgical cases including mass removal, treatment of oral infections and abscesses, and surgical extractions requiring sectioning of teeth or bone work.
Pre-anesthetic bloodwork
Recommended before dental procedures — particularly in older cats. Cats are prone to subclinical kidney disease, and bloodwork helps us understand organ function before anesthesia. If we identify anything that warrants pre-procedure medication, we'll prescribe what's needed.
Post-op care
Your cat goes home with complete pain management and clear aftercare instructions. Feline pain management after dental procedures is something we take seriously — cats that are comfortable heal faster. Soft food is recommended for a short period after extractions.

Feline-specific conditions we treat

Tooth Resorption
Formerly called FORLs or FRLs
One of the most common and most painful conditions in cats — and one of the most underdiagnosed. The body breaks down tooth structure from the inside out. On the surface, nothing looks obviously wrong. On X-ray, the destruction is often significant. Affected cats may show subtle signs or none at all. Treatment is extraction of the affected tooth. The relief is typically immediate and dramatic.
Stomatitis
Severe oral inflammation
A condition where the immune system attacks the tissues of the mouth. Cats with stomatitis are in significant chronic pain. The most effective treatment in most cases is full or near-full mouth extraction, which removes the teeth the immune system is reacting to. Results are often dramatic — cats that were barely eating become comfortable and active again.

What we handle

Some practices refer cat dental cases out.
We handle them here.

Cat dentistry — particularly complex extractions, multi-tooth procedures, and conditions like stomatitis — requires experience, patience, and a willingness to take on cases that take time. Not every practice is set up for it.

At Nova Pets, Dr. Masood has been performing feline dental procedures for over 35 years. We regularly see cats whose owners were told elsewhere that the procedure couldn't be done or needed to go to a specialist. In many of those cases, we handle it right here.

If you've been told your cat needs dental work and you're not sure where to turn — call us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can handle it or whether a specialist truly is the right call.
